As a business consultant and educator I travel the world helping professionals come to grips with strategic issues and the means to realize their corporate goals. It has been my experience that many organizations are relying on architectural practices to close the gap from strategy to implementation and execution. I have frequently seen organizations with both business process groups and business architecture communities working with little collaboration and sometimes with professional disregard of work other than their own. In my experience, the optimum scenario is when both groups work with one another right from the beginning and not see the other domain as subservient to their own. Separating the practices is suboptimal at best and just wrong at worst.

This session will look at how both business architecture and BPM can work together strategically. There are lots of business architecture groups that see processes only as a means of delivering capabilities and delve into workflow models to define implementation requirements. What they are missing is that business processes are also an architectural construct in their own right enabling business strategy to be segmented and realized. This perspective becomes especially important when the business organization is mature enough to want to have end-to-end measurement, cross functional stewardship and value based performance management over such high level processes. Business processes deserve an architecture of their own that needs to be associated and aligned with capability maps and value streams and not derivatives of them. Remember the M in BPM is for ‘Management’.

• Strategic traceability
• The myth of decomposition: welcome to association
• Processes and capabilities: both primary architectural citizens
• The essential nature of stakeholder analysis for process architecture design
• Business processes for operational performance management and accountability
• Capabilities for building enablement
• Process / Capability Association for portfolio derivation
