01/15/2014 The Business Architecture Guild is pleased to announce the release of A Guide to the Business Architecture Body of Knowledge® (BIZBOK ® Guide) Version 3.5. As business architecture continues to help organizations shape, plan and deploy priority business initiatives, the BIZBOK® Guide continues to evolve to reflect industry best practices. These business priorities include strategic plan development and deployment, business impact analysis, portfolio investment analysis, customer value enhancement and a variety of other transformation initiatives.

Version 3.5 highlights include the addition of the Business Architecture Maturity Model. The maturity model was conceived and developed by Guild members seeking a standardized approach to assess the quality and effectiveness of business architecture deployment at their organizations. A member presentation at the Business Architecture Innovation Summit at the end of March in Reston, VA will share early experiences in applying this model. Another highlight includes the Business Architecture Roles and Competencies model, which defines various competencies by role. These updates are the result of member-driven, collaborative development efforts that began as discussion groups in the Guild Member Community.

Version 3.5 additionally includes major enhancements to strategy mapping and incorporation of Value Network analysis into organization mapping and value mapping. Version 3.5 also features updates and refinements to other core and practice-based topic areas. These include capability mapping, business architecture and business process modeling and management, performance mapping, the business architecture knowledgebase, business architecture and IT architecture alignment, and business architecture and requirements analysis. Finally, Version 3.5 features a new set of business architecture study questions. Interested parties may download a summary of Version 3.5 updates from the BIZBOK ® Guide homepage and Version 3.5 Part 1: Introduction and Table of Contents from the Business Architecture Guild Resource Page.

According to business architect Dale Howard, "We are using BIZBOK ® Guide 3.5 to help formulate and structure our business architecture efforts. It provides business architecture insights that we have not found in other industry literature.” Dale is one of many members using the BIZBOK ® Guide, reflecting the rapid growth in size and sophistication of the Guild Member Community. Increased Guild member sophistication is exemplified by the fact that the majority of Version 3.5 enhancements were contributed by Guild members. Teams self-organize in the Guild Member Community, set goals, define deliverables and formalize content. Guild leadership provides mentoring and related support for these efforts. Collaborative teams are already organizing to begin work on BIZBOK ® Guide Version 4.0.

The use of the BIZBOK® Guide is also evident in discussions with industry experts. According to Whynde Melaragno, Business Architecture Practice Director at STA Group, "As business architecture continues to drive successful large-scale business transformations, we leverage our experience and the best practices outlined in the BIZBOK ® Guide v3.5 to deliver industry-aligned solutions to our customers. As thought leaders and practitioners in business architecture, we believe the BIZBOK ® Guide and Guild Member Community play a significant role in unifying thought around business architecture concepts and raising awareness of the unparalleled value it brings.” As more and more organizations worldwide successfully apply business architecture and refine best practices, the BIZBOK ® Guide will grow correspondingly in depth and sophistication to reflect those practices and experiences.

The Business Architecture Guild generally releases two versions of the BIZBOK ® Guide annually using an agile approach to the evolution of best practices. As new content is deployed, feedback and contributions from the Guild Member Community evolve that content in future releases. Guild leadership, in close conjunction with the member community, continues to identify new concepts and content that can be shared as soon as possible to elicit buy-in and feedback. In addition to contributions from the Guild Member Community, feedback is obtained at events such as the Business Architecture Innovation Summit and upcoming Guild Member Campfire (to be held after the Summit in Reston, VA).
